Hello guys,

now that Galaxy support is going very good, and we have been implementing better sound support in both Vorticon and Galaxy Engine, I'm asking, if we should drop the 8-bit sound support.

With bits I mean how the hardware Soundcard works on your system. I do not mean the PC Speaker sounds or any of the adlib sounds. The 8 bits are for output to your hardware. PC Speaker sounds and adlib sounds will stay untouched and only improved.

We also will continue supporting the rates 11 Khz, 22 Khz, 44 Khz and 48 Khz.

As far I know, nobody uses those or don't even need that mode.

Modern PCs use 16-bit Sound at least everywhere, and even all the embedded devices we support seem to have 16-bit sound already. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

So I will ask you, should I drop that support, because 8-bit sound is a bit hard to maintain and not really worth for it.

One advantage I see with the 8-bit sound is the memory. All the sound streams in CG only will need half of the memory when using 8-bit, but I can assure you, since we optimized a lot of things there it is not that much someone would save and you get worse quality of course.

Let me know about your opinion Happy

Support it in a deprciated manner: keep the things it's already implemented in but advise against using it.

Is there any device on which CG runs that uses 8-bit sound? Then keep it around in the suggested deprecated manner. Otherwise, what's the point?

But I will continue supporting just to be sure.
