I think that, this being the second time in recent memory BP has dropped the ball on safety (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_City_Refinery_explosion), we should force them to pay for the damages and then politely refuse to do business with them again. Yes, I realize that there are dangers associated with drilling holes in highly pressurized flammable liquid contained deep under bedrock (seriously, is nuclear power really that bad compared to the mess oil's created?), but when you fail to follow safety regulations, you should be fired.

Escept that it wasn't their rig. If student accomodation has a leaky pipe, whose responsibility is it to fix it? If you said the landlord, lay off BP!

DHeadshot is right - it was a US made US kept American rig.

Don't forget how BP is nearly 50% American owned and there are sooo many people in the US employed by BP - almost as many as in the UK I think. If not more DHeadshot?

Oh, and ABC News 24 has started!!! Woo! Will has a new favorite channel!

The stats were something like 50% UK and 49% US last time I heard...

ABC Australia I presume. We used to get the ITV News Channel before they shut it down and it was almost as good as BBC News 24. We now get Sky News and CNN too, but they're just rubbish in comparison. Presumably you get one of those out there - how does the new channel compare?

Yes. I believe all this BP-bashing is just plain foolishness. I've seen people with anti-BP t-shirts, and just thought to myself, "These people are of the same intelligence as the potheads who protest outside city hall meetings wearing Che Guavera shirts..."

I disagree. BP is an asshole. Here in Chicago they wanted to pollute our lake, from where we get our water. Only thanks to huge protests was that stopped. Who in their right minds poisons drinking water?

BP also pays death squads in colombia, to go about killing innocent people, beacuse they want to drill oil on the lands of these indigenous folk.

This disaster in the gulf could have been prevented. But they wanted to cut costs by removing the safety precausions.

No mercy. Rally against BP!

They are guilty for the exon spill up in alaska. Sure, it might have been exon's tanker... but who led the tanker there?

Meh, I don't like news in America. Hopefully your ABC is different. Here the big ones like ABC, FOX, CNN, and others are just lame. They have little foreign news. They're just corporate owned things that brainwash the population.
I like the foreign news more, like the BBC, France 24, some German one, Russia Today and even Al Jezirah.

At any rate, kosovo's doomed no matter what they do. They're like africa. No hope really. Perhaps they are in a worse situation, as Russia and China will never let them be UN members...

I just hope that the lame ruling does not trigger new secession conflicts.
Macedonia for example could be next.

Ah, I stand corrected on Rig ownership etc.

And yeah, that's it!

ABC in Australia is the state-run channel. The new channel is like SBS' (Special Broadcasting Service) news - world news. Alternates between local and international news.

ABC America is, to use the American term, "Trash"

ABC Australia is excellent. Like the BBC Cheeky

EDIT: I'm not really sure if Kosovo should get independence. It's one of the more Serbian parts of Serbia in history, just not population - it's just a massive migration influx which has stolen the state from Serbia! I do NOT condone the attempted genocide there for the record. I just think it's possibly not the fairest thing to split it from Serbia.

Oh and is that german one the journal perchance? we get that and like 25 other countries' news (in their language) here on SBS daily.

EDIT 2: Oh, Scarlet, aren't there a lot of oil companies like that? Haha, Nike is one of the worst for human rights (not what u meant I know but just saying). Where is Nike from?

There was never a planned genocide attempt. There was resistance to terrorism, kinda like resistance to al-quaida.
The term genocide was used to rustle up support for the destruction of a society, having the effect of widespread civilian bombing.
Remember when they said that 100,000 or 200,000 people were killed prior to the start of bombing? That number increased up to 500,000. And in the entire conflict at most 10,000 people died on "both" sides. So that explains how awful the media was/is.

If any genocide has been going on it is the serbian cultural genocide.... their erradication from kosovo.

I dunno. Probably? Some are better, some are worse... well dunno about the worse part.

I share half of that sentiment - the albanians were trying to identify as a new identity and hence to try and exterminate them (as milosevic (can't ever spell his name) DID try and do) would class a genocide.

But yes, you said how I feel exactly - It was the Genocide of Serbian culture! *would exalt if you could in this forum*

I would have thought that Coca Cola is worse than Nike, since they redirect the water supply in drought-ridden regions so they can manufacture Coke, meaning that if the locals want anything to drink, they have to buy a Coke because there's no water left for them!

This simply is not true. It is a concocted lie that was used to promote the war.

Milosevic always wanted peace. The West did not, because Milosevic was a socialist. The West rejected peace proposals that involved the UN, which Milosevic called for many times. The point is that NATO gave an ultimatum which asked for Serbia to become a colony... that rambulliet ultimatum.

I guess I have a western education then. Dopekeen

But yeah, what ever happened, it was Serbia fighting for what was/is/was theirs.
