"A Christmas Levelpack" Deadline 20.12.10

Post by tulip »

That's right, I'll host the next community level pack, and I know it's barely october, but this will be a christmas present from the community for the community.
We have a variety of christmas themed mods to choose from, to assess which one you guys would like most for levelling, this poll will run for 30 days, after that it will leave about 6 to seven weeks for actual level building till christmas.

These are the choices

Image
Christmas Special 2004: A classic, and a personal favourite of me ever since, features easter, toothfairy and halloween themes as well
Image
A Christmas Mod: This would be interesting I bet because enemy behaviours have been completely changed in this one. Also the original only got one level, it would deserve more.
Image
A Very Keen Christmas: Very nice graphics here by Allstories, the original had barely changed Keen 1 levels, so a levelpack would be great here. Gameplay is unchanged Keen 1 style.
Image
Merry Keenmas: A similar situation as with A Very Keen Christmas, the original didn't change the Keen 2 levels much. We could do some interesting levels here, with those changes in enemy behaviour. This is also the only Keen 2 mod in this list.
Image
How the Vorticon Stole Christmas: The second christmas mod where you play as vorticon, this mod offers some interesting leveldesign possibilities, not only because the player character is wider than 1 tile here.

You can all click on the title to get to the keenwiki page with a download link if you want to play them first. Once we decided on a mod, the usual rules of a level pack will apply: Level must be completable and sent to me before the deadline which I will then define. The community will vote which level was the best. Maybe there will even be a small prize for the winner, we'll see.

If we have enough contributors this will save you from any boredom on the christmas holidays.

Poll over, "A Christmas Mod" it is

Does it actually matter that much? I mean, they're all Keen 1 maps and all the items have roughly the same behaviour. Couldn't a map for one be used for another just as easily?

a clear and simple: yes. it matters that much. you can't just take one and use it for another, because the tilesets are completely different and the position of items is different, and the position of blocking tiles is different, and well you get the picture.. moreover the enemy behaviour is different for some of them (vastly in one case), and one of them is Keen 2. so yes it matters.

I haven't even seen two of those. :eek I'm out of the loop a bit... I voted for "A Christmas Mod" as it looks pretty neat and I haven't even tried it. I think. :dopekeen

Yeah, it's funny how there are so many mods in this theme. Although to many kids it's the best day of the year. But not sure it explains much in this case. :confused
My newest mod - Commander Keen: Sunset: viewtopic.php?t=8568 | codename H.Y.E.N.A.

Sweet! A new level competition! Now I don't have to host one until 2011! :D

I voted Christmas Special 2004, because I was hoping to do a Nightmare Before Christmas style level, which would require the Halloween titles exclusively contained in it. :)

We could use the multiple tileset patch and give everyone the option of choosing which one they want to use. Or combine chunks of different tilesets into one.

My vote goes to Christmas Special 2004, even though A Christmas Mod seems to be more popular by far. I just find the former much more colourful and interesting.

It looks vorticony, so I guess I'll vote for option five.

I voted for the wrong mod, I was aiming for A Christmas Mod, but misclicked.

Any news? I'd really like to contribute a nice, easy level for this. :)

oh man, I'm one day late, and you caught me already, haha

Ok, A Christmas Mod won in a landslide, so that's the mod we're gonna do

You can get it here (extracted graphics already included)

And grab Mindbelt, if you haven't got it so far here

When you've finished a level you can send it to my
email (about here ---------v ), and I'll check if it's completable, and add it to the pack.
