Sounds in Commander Keen Galaxy

Post by gerstrong »

Hello Guys,

for those who have played Keen 4 with CG version 0.3.3.0 you might have noticed that the music is working now, but there is no sound.

Now I have the way to also play Adlib sounds. I think that is a great feature and I will add it soon to CG.

After this more play code will go into the engine, as we need it more playable. I also will tie up the code structure much more to make it a) faster and b) better to read for new developers.

The PC Speaker Sound is planned to be supported later. I don't think you are that interested in that feature. At least I am not... :o

I always thought the Paddle War sound effects sounded better over the PC Speaker...

I always preferred PC Speaker effects in general.
I'd like to get a Futurama mod going. Here's what I've got so far:

Yeah. Until I played TKoK, I didn't even know there was an adlib sound option!

Well, I'm still working on the Galaxy Sounds support. I really need to be careful with that code. Our tough luck in CG is that it was meant more like for OGG only. I never thought about that section. So I had to restructure the code and separate more functions. This is important because the OPL Emulator is used for both sound and music. I also found a lot of performance problems, but they are being worked out... :-)

At least the Audio Code got better and I'm to going continue working on it. I think and of month we will get sounds in Galaxy... :-)

Well I see PC Speaker Sounds in Keen 4 are popular. I can reproduce those if you want also. Should I do that first, before I continue on the playcode?

No, for goodness sake focus on the playcode. Music is polish, gameplay is a core element.

Well, both Adlib and PC Speaker Sounds can now be chosen... :-)

I hope that is better...

Music was already implemented, this was about the sound effects. But I agree - gameplay before sound... though now apparently sound is already implemented, anyway. :dopekeen
